What Does a Switchboard Upgrade Cost in Brisbane?

By KTM Solutions·Licensed Brisbane electricians·Updated 21 July 2026·2 min read

Why Prices Vary So Much

Search this question and you will find numbers ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, and the frustrating truth is that all of them can be right. Two Brisbane houses on the same street can need very different jobs. Here is what actually determines the price:

1. What is on the board now

Replacing a handful of ceramic fuses with modern circuit breakers and safety switches is the simplest case. Boards with many circuits, old relays, or decades of add-ons take longer to migrate safely.

2. Asbestos-era panels

Many Brisbane boards installed before the late 1980s are mounted on asbestos-containing backing panels. These must be handled and disposed of under strict procedures, which adds labour and disposal cost. It is the single most common surprise in older homes.

3. Mains, earthing and consumer mains condition

An upgrade is only as safe as what feeds it. If the inspection finds degraded consumer mains or earthing that no longer meets standard, fixing that is part of doing the job properly, and quoting it up front beats discovering it mid-job.

4. Capacity you want to add

Solar, a battery, an EV charger, a pool, ducted air conditioning or a three-phase upgrade all change the board you need. Building that capacity in during the upgrade is far cheaper than a second visit later.

How to get a real number

Any electrician quoting a firm price without seeing your board (or at least a photo of it) is guessing, and guesses grow on the day. Our process: send a photo or book a free inspection, get a fixed quote, and that is the number you pay. Read more about what is included on our switchboard upgrade service page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can't find your answer? Call 07 3813 0067 and we will happily talk it through.

Why will nobody give me a price over the phone?
Because the honest price depends on the board's condition, asbestos, mains and earthing, which cannot be assessed unseen. A photo of your open board gets you a fast, realistic ballpark, and an inspection gets you a fixed quote.
Does an upgrade include safety switches?
It should, on every circuit, and Queensland rules require them on power circuits. Confirm any quote you receive covers whole-of-board safety switch protection, not just one or two circuits.
Will the power be off all day?
No. Most residential upgrades are completed within a single visit, and supply is only off for part of it while the changeover happens.
Is a switchboard upgrade worth it if I am selling?
Often yes. Building and pest inspections flag ceramic fuses and missing safety switches, and buyers negotiate hard on them. A certified modern board removes the objection.
Can I just replace one blown fuse instead?
You can, and sometimes that is the right call. But if fuses blow regularly, the board runs hot, or there are no safety switches, patching one symptom leaves the underlying limits in place. We will tell you honestly which situation yours is.
