Is Your Home Compliant With QLD's Smoke Alarm Laws?

Queensland has the strictest smoke alarm laws in Australia, and the final deadline, 1 January 2027, applies to every home in the state. Homes being sold or leased have had to comply since 2022. Most Brisbane homes are not there yet: they still run old standalone alarms that are not photoelectric, not interconnected, and often past their 10-year life.

We bring homes up to standard the easy way. Using wireless-interconnected photoelectric alarms, we can usually supply, install, interconnect, test and certify a whole home in one visit, with no ceiling damage and clear compliance paperwork for your records. Why Most Brisbane Homes Need an Upgrade

Under the current rules, a compliant home needs photoelectric alarms, less than 10 years old, interconnected so they all sound together, in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every storey, powered by mains or a non-removable 10-year battery. The typical existing home meets almost none of that: one or two standalone alarms, often ionisation, often expired.

That usually means four or five new alarms for a standard three-bedroom home, all talking to each other. It sounds like a big job, but wireless interconnection keeps it simple and tidy, and we complete most homes in a single visit. You get working, compliant protection and paperwork that proves it.

Smoke Alarm Compliance, Made Simple

The rules are strict but the process does not have to be stressful. Here is how we get a Brisbane home compliant:

  • We check what you have now and map out what the law requires for your specific floor plan
  • You get a fixed quote up front covering supply, install, interconnection, testing and certification
  • We install photoelectric, interconnected alarms, usually wireless so there is no ceiling damage
  • We test every alarm, remove the old ones, and hand you compliance documentation

If you want to understand the legislation in full before you book, our guide to Queensland's smoke alarm rules walks through the dates, the placement rules and what counts as a compliant alarm. When you are ready, request a quote and we will confirm exactly what your home needs.

How It Works

Three steps from non-compliant to certified, usually in a single visit.

1

Request a quote

Tell us your home's layout, or how many bedrooms and storeys, and we give you a clear fixed price up front.

2

We install in one visit

Photoelectric, interconnected alarms fitted and linked, with power off only briefly for any hardwired units.

3

Tested and certified

Every alarm is tested, old units removed, and you receive compliance documentation for your records, sale or lease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can't find your answer? Call 07 3813 0067 and we will happily talk it through.

Do I legally need to upgrade my smoke alarms?
If you are selling or leasing a Queensland home, yes, already. For owner-occupiers, every home must have photoelectric, interconnected alarms by 1 January 2027. Our smoke alarm rules guide explains exactly which deadline applies to you.
How many alarms will my home need?
One in each bedroom, one in any hallway connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and at least one on every storey. A typical three-bedroom single-storey home usually needs four to five. We confirm the exact number in your quote.
Will you need to run cables through my ceiling?
Usually not. We use wireless-interconnected alarms in most existing homes, so they all sound together without new cabling or ceiling damage. Where alarms are already hardwired, replacements stay hardwired.
Can you make my rental property compliant?
Yes. We install compliant alarms and provide the documentation landlords and agents need, including the testing required within 30 days before each new tenancy or renewal.
How long does it take?
Most homes are completed in a single visit. Larger or multi-storey homes can take a little longer, and we tell you before we start.
My alarms still beep when tested. Do I really need new ones?
Working is not the same as compliant. Alarms must also be photoelectric, interconnected, and under 10 years old. Old hardwired or ionisation alarms that still beep usually still need replacing.
Do you supply the alarms or do I?
We supply and install quality photoelectric alarms as part of the fixed price, so you do not need to source anything. If you have already bought compliant units we are happy to fit those.
How much does smoke alarm installation cost?
It depends on how many alarms your home needs and whether they are wired or wireless. We give you a clear fixed quote up front before any work starts, so there are no surprises.
